Six Japan-America Society of Hawaii Ambassadors to visit Japan

EACH YEAR – THE JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF HAWAII – CHOOSES SIX AMBASSADORS FROM ACROSS THE STATE – TO ATTEND THE ASIAN PACIFIC CHILDREN'S CONVENTION IN FUKUOKA JAPAN – WHICH HAPPENS IN JULY. JOINING US THIS MORNING ARE – REYNA KANEKO – THE PRESIDENT OF THE JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF HAWAII… AND JALEN MATSU-URA – A JUNIOR AMBASSADOR ROSS: 1. Q – WHAT CAN YOU TELL US ABOUT THE CONVENTION – AND HOW IS JASH INVOLVED? REYNA KANEKO, PRESIDENT OF A- THE ASIAN PACIFIC CHILDREN'S CONVENTION IS A GLOBAL YOUTH CAMP FOUNDED ANNIVERSARY OF THE CITY OF FUKUOKA.

THE GOAL OF THE APCC IS TO FOSTER YOUNG CHILDREN TO BECOME GLOBAL WORLD LEADERS AND TO HELP SHAPE THE WORLD PLACE. ITS PURPOSE IS TO PROMOTE INTERNATIONAL COOPERATION BECOME ADULTS WITH A STRONG SOCIAL RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE WORLD. B- EVERY YEAR, HAWAII IS INVITED TO PARTICIPATE, AND JASH SELECTS SIX 10- OR 11-YEAR-OLD JUNIOR AMBASSADORS TO FUKUOKA TO MEET OVER 200 FELLOW JAS FROM 40 DIFFERENT COUNTRIES AND REGIONS AT A WEEK LONG EXCHANGE AND WILL STAY WITH A JAPANESE HOST FAMILY. THE STUDENTS SELECTED THIS YEAR ARE: KRISTEN BARRERA, ELLA BOSWORTH, CALEB KAGAWA, ANUHEA KEALOHA, JALEN MATSUURA AND CARTER NOBUHARA. THIS PROGRAM IS FREE FOR THE PARTICIPANTS AND FUNDED BY THE APCC, A NON-PROFIT ORGANIZATION IN JAPAN AND THE JAPANESE GOVERNMENT. ROSS: 2. Q – HOW ARE YOU AND THE OTHER STUDENTS PERPARING FOR THE CONVENTION? JALEN MATSUURA, JAPAN-AMERICA SOCIETY OF HAWAII JUNIOR AMBASSADOR A- PRIOR TO ATTENDING THE CONFERENCE, JASH PROVIDES MONTHLY TRAINING FOR THE JAS TO DEVELOP TEAM- BUILDING SKILLS, CULTURAL ETIQUETTE, LEARN ABOUT HAWAII AS WELL AS OTHER COUNTRIES PARTICIPATING IN THE APCC AND PARTICIPATE IN ACTIVITIES THAT INCLUDE: ATTENDING THE HONOLULU FESTIVAL, LEARNING ABOUT JAPANESE FOOD THROUGH A SCAVENGER HUNT EXCURSION AND AN OVERNIGHT STAY AT CAMP ERDMAN.

WHILE IN JAPAN, THE JAS ARE REQUIRED TO GIVE A CULTURAL PERFORMANCE UNIQUE TO THEIR COUNTRY OR REGION. TO REPRESENT HAWAII, THE STUDENTS WILL BE PERFORMING A HULA TAUGHT BY KUMU HULA BLAINE KIA. A- JASH SELECTS AND TRAINS THE SIX 10- OR 11-YEAR-OLD JUNIOR AMBASSADORS WHO REPRESENT HAWAII AT THE APCC EACH YEAR. THE APPLICATION IS AVAILABLE IN NOVEMBER AND CAN BE FOUND ONLINE ARE HELD IN JANUARY, AND ONCE THE SIX ARE SELECTED, TRAINING WORKSHOPS ARE HELD MONTHLY UNTIL THE TRIP IN JULY TO FUKUOKA.
