A Journey to Remember: From Wuxi to Shanghai
In a world where the journey is often as remarkable as the destination, my recent trip to China was an experience filled with moments that will forever be etched in my memory. From the sprawling metropolis of Shanghai to the picturesque landscapes of Wuxi, the trip was an adventure like no other. This blog post will detail my experiences in Wuxi and Shanghai, focusing on the prevalence of WeChat as a payment method, the friendliness of the locals, and their curiosity about foreigners.
The Charm of Wuxi
My journey began in Wuxi, a city located in the southern Jiangsu province of China. Known as the ‘Little Shanghai,’ Wuxi is famous for its beautiful lakes, traditional Chinese gardens, and its warm and welcoming residents.
Despite its sprawling development and urbanization, Wuxi has retained its traditional charm. A visit to the Lingshan Grand Buddha was a spiritual experience that showcased the city’s rich history and cultural heritage. The Grand Buddha, towering at 88 meters, is one of the largest Buddha statues in the world and is a must-visit for anyone traveling to Wuxi.
WeChat – The Digital Wallet
Navigating the financial landscape in China was made incredibly easy thanks to WeChat, the super-app used by almost everyone in the country. From hailing a taxi to buying street food, WeChat is used for virtually all transactions, big or small. Setting up a WeChat Wallet was straightforward, and I was able to link my bank card to the app, converting it into a digital wallet. This experience made me realize the extent to which China has embraced cashless payments, making it very convenient for travelers.
Shanghai – The City of the Future
After a memorable stay in Wuxi, I took a high-speed train to Shanghai, China’s largest city and a global financial hub. The contrast between the two cities was immediately apparent, with Shanghai’s skyline dominated by futuristic skyscrapers and bustling streets.
One of the highlights of my trip was visiting the Shanghai Tower, the second tallest building in the world. The view from the observation deck was breathtaking and provided a panoramic view of this incredible city.
The Friendliness and Curiosity of Locals
Throughout my journey, I was touched by the friendliness and curiosity of the people I encountered. Despite the language barrier, many locals went out of their way to help me when I needed assistance. I also noticed a sense of curiosity from the locals, especially in Wuxi, where foreign tourists are less common. Many locals were eager to strike up a conversation and learn more about my culture and experiences.
Conclusion
My trip to Wuxi and Shanghai was an unforgettable experience that provided a glimpse into China’s rich history and its rapid modernization. The use of WeChat as a payment method, the friendliness and curiosity of the locals, and the contrast between the traditional charm of Wuxi and the futuristic skyline of Shanghai were highlights of my journey.
Whether you are interested in history, culture, or modern architecture, both Wuxi and Shanghai have something to offer. I encourage anyone considering a trip to China to include these two incredible cities in their itinerary.
